We Support Children’s Continuing Education

Ayşe’s mother says, “My daughter wants to go to school very much, but we cannot support her financially. It is difficult for us to meet her school needs such as bags and stationery,” Ayşe’s mother says. “I really want her to go to school, but there is nothing we can do,” she adds.

Ayşe, 10, migrated to Turkey from Syria with her family in 2018. She is one of the family’s three children. Two of her siblings are attending school, but they cannot send Ayşe to school because paying for Ayşe’s school fees would put even more economic strain on the family. Ayşe wants to go to school like her siblings.

Every Child Has the Right to Education!

Disruption of the usual social structure such as migration and refugees makes it difficult for children to access basic services such as education and health. According to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which almost all countries, including Turkey, have signed, “Every child has the right to education.”

The realization of this right for migrant and refugee children depends on overcoming social and economic obstacles. But how will children affected by migration and refugee conditions exercise this right? How will they overcome these obstacles?

As part of our efforts to support children’s education in Esenyurt, we aim to reduce these barriers and ensure that children attend school. Thus, we contribute to ensuring that every child we can reach has access to the right to education. In addition to being a right, education is one of the most basic needs of children in order for them to build their present and future with strength.

Accelerated Catch-Up Courses

Courses organized for children who cannot continue their education for a long time and who have difficulty in their studies are of great importance for them to make up for the deficiencies in the subjects they have fallen behind. Courses organized to compensate for these deficiencies help students regain the time they have lost and strengthen them in the subjects they are lacking in. The courses we organize in cooperation with Esenyurt Municipality help children understand their lessons better. At the same time, their self-confidence increases as they learn and understand their lessons easily. Children, who have been away from the social environment for a long time, also develop their social skills by making new friends in the course.

Turkish Courses

Refugee children whose mother tongue is not Turkish, even if they can speak Turkish, need more advanced language skills to follow and participate in lessons. Courses are organized to help refugee children who cannot use Turkish effectively overcome the difficulties they face both in school life and in their social environment. Inability to use Turkish effectively can lead to children having difficulty understanding lessons and not being able to communicate effectively with their teachers or friends. This can cause children to feel left behind at school and experience a loss of self-confidence. The Turkish courses we organize in cooperation with Esenyurt Public Education Center aim to reduce these problems. By improving children’s ability to speak, understand and write Turkish, they participate more actively in classes. At the same time, they communicate more easily with their friends. Thus, their ability to express themselves in their social environment also improves.

School Supplies Support

Access to school supplies is a major problem for families with insufficient financial means. Children who do not have basic materials such as bags, notebooks and pencils are unable to fully participate in lessons and this negatively affects their learning process. When families struggle to meet these needs, children’s motivation decreases and their interest in school wanes. By providing school supplies, we aim to ease the financial burden of families and ensure that children continue to attend school.

We Support Children’s Psychological Health

Earthquakes, forced migration and economic hardship have a profound impact on children and families. Children may stop going to school or have difficulty in their studies after these events. Families may not be able to support their children sufficiently while dealing with their own problems. This makes life even more difficult for both children and families. In psychosocial support groups, children share their problems and feel that they are not alone. These activities help children to feel safe. With individual psychological support, we seek solutions to the specific problems of children and families together. Our aim is to reduce the effects of the problems experienced by both children and families.

Our Partnerships
In cooperation with Esenyurt Municipality, Public Education Center, Guidance and Research Center (RAM) and Migration Management, we try to support children to overcome the difficulties they face in education. We organize accelerated courses with Esenyurt Municipality. We support children’s language learning by opening Turkish courses with the Public Education Center. RAM provides educational support to children with special needs, while Migration Management supports the identity and registration procedures of refugee children. We have been working with women and children in Esenyurt for a long time. This is an important factor in better understanding the needs in the region and establishing strong collaborations with institutions.
