Our 2024 Efforts in Hatay: Basic Needs Distribution and Access to Clean Water

Basic Needs Distributions

In 2024, we continued to distribute to people affected by the earthquake in Hatay, especially women, children and people with difficulties in accessing support. Around 50,000 people were reached with necessities. We distributed hygiene kits, baby kits, dry food, blankets and radiators. Distributions were made in Altınözü, Antakya, Arsuz, Belen, Defne, İskenderun, Kırıkhan, Kumlu, Reyhanlı and Samandağ districts. Priority was given to people living in tents, containers, in settlements far from the center, who have care responsibilities and who cannot access support. Addresses were grouped and weekly distribution plans were created. The distributions were made by a team of two social workers and a driver who went directly to containers, tents and households. After each distribution, we met to evaluate the day, considering logistical problems, observations in the field and feedback from earthquake survivors. In this process, we collaborated with public institutions, municipalities and civil society organizations, as well as benefited from the data we obtained from our field research.

Access to Clean Water

The February 6, 2023 earthquakes severely damaged the infrastructure in Hatay, rendering municipal water unusable. The contamination of tap water threatened the health of earthquake victims and made their daily lives more difficult. To support the use of clean water, we installed ready-to-use water purification devices in container cities in cooperation with AFAD. These devices helped make life easier for earthquake victims by providing safe and clean drinking water.

We continue our efforts to produce permanent solutions and improve living conditions in the region.

* During MaviKalem’s work in the field, water purifiers were provided with the support of KIgA e.V. and Opusa (Operation USA).
* The distribution of basic needs was made with the support of Stichting Vluchteling.
