The “Access to Education” project, which we have been running for 16 months with children in Esenyurt, continues in the Istanbul’s most populous and most migrant-influenced district. Needs are being reviewed and support is being provided for the new academic year.
MaviKalem is implementing an “Access to Education” project with children in the Esenyurt district of Istanbul. As part of the project, we are working to reduce and, if possible, eliminate barriers to children’s access to education. Our project is multi-layered: it works simultaneously with children, schools, and parents.
Our project began operations for the fall semester on September 8, 2025, with the first bell ringing for the 2025-2026 academic year. Two separate initiatives were conducted to meet children’s school supply needs.
The first involves providing children with the stationery they need for their school life. These items include backpacks, pencil cases, notebooks, pens, erasers, pencil sharpeners, drawing pads, and crayons. In our project, children’s needs for school enrollment are identified and addressed through case management processes. 44 children identified with needs have been provided with supplies, and their educational progress is being monitored.
Our second initiative is to intervene and resolve the necessary situations for children’s schooling, as part of the emergency fund. In August 2025, with a statement by the Minister of National Education, efforts to strengthen the use of uniforms in schools were initiated. The needs of the children reached by our project were assessed, and it was determined that the parents of 15 children could not afford to provide uniforms. During this process, we identified the places where the uniforms worn by these children were sold, and these forms were provided through the emergency fund. This support allowed the children to feel like students at the school and to attend school with confidence.
Our project and work to support children’s access to school and education, identify and address their disabilities, are ongoing.
