A Summer Full of Artistic Adventures...

With this summer’s "Art Club" there is no time for feeling bored for the children of the Fener/Balat area.

It’s all about discovering "art" in its manifold forms: In weekly club sessions children are introduced to contemporary artists, various techniques of creative art and other art-related topics. Exciting trips take club attendants to Istanbul’s artistic and historical sites. Taking part in the activities provided by the places we visit and by using means of informal learning while touring, the children are encouraged to explore exhibitions and museums at their own pace and to reflect on their impressions.

So far "Summer Art Club" excursions have taken us to the Botero exhibition at Pera Museum, the „Magic in Light“ workshop at Young Istanbul Modern and to Miniatürk. More places are waiting to be explored by the curious Fener/Balat crowd.

A Park Full of Poi–Spinning Children

Every Tuesday afternoon a crowd of children aged 6 – 12 can be found in the park along the Haliç, spinning Poi with great determination and lots of laughter.

"Poi"–spinning is an ancient tradition of the Maori culture of New Zealand. From there the technique has spread to other countries and is now widely practiced as a performing art resembling juggling.

Our Poi kits consist of socks filled with sand-filled balls. By spinning them in circles around the body various tricks can be done which finally result in all sorts of choreographies.

The children enjoy being out in the open, becoming familiar with new moves and tricks very much.
